Mucha

Though often remembered for decorative Art Nouveau posters, Alphonse Mucha’s deeper work was rooted in resistance. A proud Czech nationalist, he used art to preserve Slavic identity under Austro-Hungarian rule, and later created The Slav Epic - a monumental series celebrating the spirit of oppressed peoples.

When the Nazis occupied Czechoslovakia, Mucha was among the first arrested. His pan-Slavic ideals and influence were considered dangerous. He died soon after, weakened by the trauma.
