Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita was once one of the most celebrated printmakers in the Netherlands - an innovator in woodcut, linocut, and decorative design. A teacher to Escher and a gifted observer of both nature and form, his work combined precision with deep poetic energy. Yet his name nearly disappeared from history. As a Jewish artist during the Second World War, de Mesquita and his family were murdered in Auschwitz. His art, nearly lost, was hidden and later rediscovered by students and archivists.
