ONE TREE PLANTED FOR EVERY ORDER
Translating roughly to "You of the Flood", this 1926 drawing by Dutch-Indonesian artist Jan Toorop blends religious symbolism with scenes of human suffering. A crowned figure, likely the Virgin Mary, reaches down to aid flood victims as dark waters engulf a stylised Dutch town.
Created after Toorop’s conversion to Catholicism, it reflects themes of disaster, redemption, and divine judgement. A powerful work from the final years of Toorop's life.

Reviving lost voices, one print at a time.
I personally source every artwork at Cynefn from museum archives and digitised collections - focusing on work by women, queer artists, and others history tried to silence.
Each piece is carefully cleaned, repaired, recoloured and researched, so the artist’s work can be seen and their legacy remembered.
